Increasing Access

We Improve Access to Fresh Produce

The Western Colorado Research Center is committed to distributing the food grown at our three sites to food banks, food pantries, emergency meal programs, and snack programs. In partnership with Food Bank of the Rockies and members of the Mesa County Hunger Alliance we have distributed almost a half-million pounds of fresh produce to communities across the Western Slope of Colorado since 2017.

We Build Relationships

We work to build mutually beneficial relationships between local agricultural producers and organizations so that producers are fairly compensated for food that is distributed to people experiencing food insecurity. We support local producers in answering their questions about partnering with hunger relief organizations, such as best crops for food pantries, logistics on donation or sales, and produce safety requirements.

We Combine Service with Scholarship

As a land-grant institution, Colorado State University is committed to research, teaching and service. Our food is grown as a part of WCRC research, scholarship and training programs. Our vegetable interns gain valuable, hands-on experience in managing 3+ acres dedicated to growing vegetables and working the community in directing the food to people experiencing food insecurity. Volunteers from the community play a critical role in helping with harvests and get to bring home the less-than-perfect crop for themselves.
