NC-140: Wine Grape Variety and Rootstock Trial

We are testing wine grape varieties for yield, cold tolerance, and fruit quality in an organic system.  The goal is to work with grape growers in the West Elks wine region to find hybrid and North American genetics to resist phylloxera and frost events.  A new planting is planned for spring 2024.  This planting is all crosses with Kozma 20-3:

  • Cabernet Volos (Cabernet Sauvignon x)
  • Fleurtai (Tocai Friulano x)
  • Soreli (Tocai Friulano x)
  • Merlot Kanthus (Merlot x)
  • Sauvignon Kretos (Sauvignon blanc x)
  • Sauvignon Rytos (Sauvignon blanc x)

Collaborating Researchers: Dr. Horst Caspari & Dr. Charlotte Oliver

Outcomes: Finding productive and healthy varieties suitable for the North Fork.
